Call to Action: Phone Zap to Support IWW New Virginia Majority Canvassers Union
Worker-organizers at a non-profit are facing continuous retaliation for union organizing. We all need to pitch in to help them with their fight for justice and dignity at work!
The Washington D.C. Area General Membership Branch of the IWW is calling for all hands on deck to support the New Virginia Majority Northern Virginia Canvassers Union. Workers at the political advocacy non-profit New Virginia Majority have been organizing for nearly two years with the support of the local IWW. They have faced severe retaliation and union busting in their fight for dignity at work. Contradicting the organization’s own values, management is doing everything it can to destroy the union campaign. Despite that, the workers attempted a de-escalation session with management recently. According to the workers:
Management at New Virginia Majority broke every promise made at our de-escalation meeting. They even rolled back their commitment to stop telling canvassers to BREAK THE LAW—something that protected *them* more than us.
No progress. No accountability.
They’ve fired organizers, ignored safety issues, cut healthcare, and tried to silence us while hiding behind Trump’s attacks on our Labor Board. Enough.
De-escalation is over.
The union is taking action.
The first action, one YOU can help with, is a PHONE ZAP. Worker-organizers at NVM are asking for as many people as possible to sign up to help with the phone zap, and to spread the word far and wide! If you subscribe to or follow our blog, we expect your participation. The world is on fire, there are no excuses for staying on the sidelines!
Check out the union’s instagram post for more information, and follow them for regular updates about their fight for justice.
This is one of the most inspiring local and regional organizing campaigns we have seen in the recent past. Just one of many examples comes from the way they went public with their union campaign:
On Monday, NVM management required us to attend a march and rally for union jobs—so we used the opportunity to demand they recognize our union! We showed up in force, got the word out about our fight to organize, and connected with our fellow workers from other offices to build power across the company.
We are overwhelmed by the support we got from the community and organizers from other unions in Richmond. There was a line to sign our petition to NVM management, and it wasn’t just because we had hot chocolate! Thank you to everyone who showed their support, especially our friends and colleagues inside NVM.

By and for Angry Education Workers is an entirely reader-supported publication that produces regular reflections on labor theory and strategy, education history, studies of educational workplaces, and reports on concrete class struggle. If you read our work and value the labor that goes into it, consider supporting it by liking or sharing this essay, subscribing on patreon, or buying us a coffee! We are workers employed in schools, museums, libraries, archives, daycares, post-secondary institutions, and other educational institutions—meaning we don’t have a lot of spare time, energy, or resources to spend on projects like this one, so it truly makes a difference. Thank you!
